No Spoiler Book Review
Carry On begins in Simon Snow’s final year at Hogwarts, errrr I mean Watford. Simon is just trying to make it through his last year without being obliterated by Voldemort, Dammit! The Insidious Humdrum! He’s faced Dragons, Ghosts, Foster Care, and his *suspected* blood sucking, vampire roommate. What will this final year bring? What will he do when he leaves Watford? Assuming he lives that long…
Carry On is Harry Potter Fan Fiction. I don’t have a lot of experience with fanfic, but Carry On was inspired by and will be loved by fans of Harry Potter.
It’s not exactly Harry Potter, I would say its Harry Potter adjacent. All of the names are different, Simon’s bookish best friend is Penelope, not Hermione. They go to Watford, not Hogwarts. The magical system is slightly different and the villain causes different problems.
One of the things I like the most is that the magicians use modern devices, drive cars, wear normal clothes and (mostly) get normal jobs. It’s cute and amusing that they don’t in Harry Potter, but Carry On acknowledges the conveniences of modern life. I think it works well for an older audience.
This is one of those books that I couldn’t wait to get back to. I listened to the audio and kept looking for excuses to listen to it. I went for lots of extra walks and spent extra time cleaning so I could listen to this fantastic fanfic!
Carry On is a great choice for older high school students and adult fans of Harry Potter. Anyone who has longed for a new installment of the Harry Potter series will love the feel of this book. Rainbow Rowell has created a wonderful, grown-up tribute to the boy wizard. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen.
That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right.
Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here — it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up.
Carry On - The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell story - but far, far more monsters.
